TL;DR: Google warns Pixel users of critical security issues. Update your device now to fix 50 bugs, including a zero-day exploit.

Google has sent out an urgent warning to some Android users. If you own a Pixel phone, it’s time to check your settings and get the newest software update right away.

50 Problems Fixed

The US tech giant has released a patch that fixes a shocking 50 issues on its own-brand Pixel devices. Seven of those bugs have been given a worrying “Critical” rating.

Zero-Day Exploit

One of the bugs has received the dreaded “zero-day” stamp. This means the bug has already been spotted and hackers are actively using it to attack devices.

Don’t wait around if you have a Pixel in your pocket.

Google’s Warning

“The Pixel Update Bulletin contains details of security vulnerabilities and functional improvements affecting supported Pixel devices,” Google said in its advisory notes.

“We encourage all customers to accept these updates to their devices.”

Limited, Targeted Exploitation

Google added: “There are indications that CVE-2024-32896 may be under limited, targeted exploitation.”

It’s not clear if any Pixel phones have been attacked, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

These are the Pixels that should be able to download the patch:

  • PIXEL 8: Pixel 8a, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro
  • OTHER PIXELS: Pixel 7a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and Pixel Fold

How to Update Your Pixel

To get the latest Android updates:

  1. Open your device’s Settings app.
  2. Near the bottom, tap System. System update. (If needed, first tap About phone or About tablet.)
  3. You’ll see your update status. Follow any on-screen steps.
