Android to Soon Show Storage Health, Battery Health Still Missing

Google’s New Way to Show Storage Health

Google is making a new way to show how healthy the storage is in your Android phone.

Our phones are being used for longer. This means parts are more likely to go bad before the phone is no longer safe to use.

So, Google is working on better support to show the status of parts on your phone.

Battery Health Not Included Yet

Many Android phones can show battery health. Samsung, OnePlus, and others have this feature.

But Android itself doesn’t support it yet.

Google will show battery cycle counts, but only on newer phones.

Storage Health Coming Soon

Along with battery health, Android is also getting ready to show the health of the storage chip in your device.

Android Authority points out a commitment to AOSP. This sets up work for a new API in Android. The API would be able to show the health of a storage chip on an Android device.

It would show the health of the chip as a percentage. This would be based on signs from UFS chips.

This isn’t part of Android just yet. But the same work was seen in Android 15 Beta 1. This suggests Google is well on its way to making this work.

Android Already Collects This Data

Android already collects this data, Android Authority notes. The new API would simply show it to apps (only system apps) such as the Settings menu.

Another page notes that Pixel already collects this data at 1% accuracy. This means the percentage shown to the user would be right within 1%.

On some other phones, this is only measured by 10%. For example, a device with 92% storage health would report back at 100%.

This new API would round up differently. It would likely show 90% in our example.

Unclear When We’ll See This

It’s not clear when we’ll see this added, but Android 15 seems likely.

Google doesn’t require this for other Android OEMs, though.

So we also don’t know if it’ll show up beyond Pixel.
